Undertakers & Monumental Masons

by SLHS on Friday 29 July 2016

Undertakers (or Funeral Directors) only appear in the trade directories starting at 1916. Before then, relatives of the deceased had to use undetakers from Alfreton or elswhere. Only when the population became large enough did undertakers move to Somercotes. There were also others in Riddings.

Monumental masons provide the headstones for graves. The first official cremation in England took place in 1885, and it would have been a long time before that form of funeral reached this area. Before that, everyone would have been buried, and many families commemorated their loved ones with a gravestone. Only two monumental masons appear in the liists. Today, the only firm of monumental masons in the local area is Cope Memorials, of Riddings.
