Fishmongers & Fried Fish Dealers

Unlike butchers, there were not many fishmongers who traded in the parish, although at one time when religion was more prevalent than it is now, it was a tradition to eat fish on Friday’s.
Whilst there were not many fishmongers, the same cannot be said of fried fish dealers, more frequently known these days as the “Fish & Chip” shop. Somercotes particularly had more than its fair share, and these are represented in the lists in reasonable numbers. Many of those listed have since been converted into other takeaways, most commonly selling Chinese or similar foods.
Considering how far away Somercotes is from the sea, the earliest mention of a fishmonger that has been found is in the 1895 listing, although the business was probably established prior to this date.
