Chemists, Druggists & Herbalists

by SLHS on Wednesday 20 July 2016

The chemist was as important a profession as it is now. In the days before the National Health Service, the first place someone might visit when ill was not a doctor, but a chemist, who could often prescribe a suitable medicine at a lower cost. If a person became very ill or had an accident, then a doctor would be consulted.

In the early days of the village, there was also the charlatan, a man who sold elixirs that he stated would cure absolutely everything, but in practice cured nothing. Advertisements even appeared in local newspapers, and Somercotes also had its resident imposter!
