BATTY, Henry Thomas

Greengrocer - Somercotes Hill

Henry Thomas Batty was born in Haverbrook, Westmorland on 18 August 1882. He married is wife, Hannah, when he was 20 years old, and it is assumed that he had already moved to the district as she was born at Riddings. The census of 1911 records that their first child was born at Riddings, but their second child, Amy was born in Somercotes. The family lived on Quarry Road in 1911, and Henry is recorded as a greengrocer. By the census of 1939, taken for the National Identity Cards, Henry and Hannah lived alone at 61, Somercotes Hill. He was still listed as a shopkeeper.

Samuel Bettison was born in 1850 in Somercotes, Derbyshire. He married Clara Annie Bennet in 1872, who was born at Birchwood. By 1911 the family lived at Somercotes Hill and Samuel is described as a “Music Dealer”. It seems that Samuel had not always been a music dealer, as in the census of 1881 he is recorded as a coal miner, although ten years later in 1891 he is described as a musician. Their son, Ernest Bettison, is also in this list.

The census of 1939 records William and his wife Elizabeth and family living at 17, Victoria Street, where he was still employed as a boot repairer. William died in 1969 at the age of 79 years.

Moses died on 12 January 1920 and left just under £515 in his Last Will & Testament, at the time a relatively large amount for someone in the district.

BURNHAM, George Coach Builder - Somercotes
BURT, Edmund Amos

Undertaker - Somercotes

Edmund Amos Burt was born on 12 June 1884. He married Beatrice Annie Clifford at Clay Cross on 20 June 1909. At the census in 1911, Amos lived with his wife and son at 33, Langley Avenue, Somercotes. His occupation was recorded as “wheelwright and coachbuilder”. Although he is recorded in the 1916 Trade Directory as an Undertaker this is still in keeping with his profession, as many carpenters and joiners increased their income by furnishing funerals  By the 1939 census Edmund had moved to Crich, Derbyshire and was employed as a “Motor Coach Builder”. He died at Crich on 30 July 1957. See also information on World War One Soldiers.

By 1901 he lived at Trowbridge, and married Caroline Ada King there on 21 August 1902. Sometime in the following few years Frank and his wife moved to Somercotes. In 1911 the family lived at 74, Nottingham Road, Somercotes and Frank’s occupation was recorded as Chemist & Druggist. On the census in 1939, John’s occupation is recorded as a carpenter and joiner, which corresponds with that of 1911. However, this is the only Thomas John Foddy recorded in the census returns, and it is possible that his wife ran the shop, although John was considered the proprietor. He was recorded as a Draper, living on Nottingham Road. There was a draper’s shop at the corner of Nottingham Road and Victoria Street [opposite the cinema]. It was owned by Henry Ward in the 1910s and 1920s, but could have been owned by Joseph Goodacre prior to this, although we cannot confirm this with certainty. The census of 1901 records Joseph living at Lower Somercotes. By 1911 Joseph described himself as a Draper and House Furnisher. In a trade directory published in 1925 there are two references for Joseph; Private resident – living at Torrington House, Somercotes [the house seems to have been named after his birthplace] and House Furnisher & draper of Manchester House, Lower Somercotes. Joseph died on 11 February 1929. He left and estate worth £4999.13s.7d., which was a large sum of money at the time.

Sometime after the marriage Frank and Ruth moved to Somercotes and he traded as a watchmaker and jeweller at 61, Nottingham Road (since re-numbered). The couple continued to live there probably until Frank's retirement, when he sold the premises and business to Edgar White.
