The windmills were named after James & Sarah Oakes and ran the Oakes Flour Mills. James was the larger windmill and is often shown with sails, whilst Sarah has non. It is said that the reason that 'Sarah' had no sails is that it stood in the shadow of James and thus there was insufficient wind to turn her sails.

The windmills were demolished in the early 1960's and the site became Diversey Chemicals.
