1847 – Licensee: Mr Sam Lycitt

Sam Lycett, who had kept “The Olde English Gentleman” stated that he could hear the miners at work in “Rachel” from his beer cellar.

Near to Queen Street, Off Birchwood Lane, a small mine, known as the “Rachel Pit” was opened in 1870. It was worked for only five years, but one of the owners said he was “quite satisfied” with the return. A tramway carried the coals from this mine down Penny Town to Muckram, where it could be transferred to the Midland Line.
